HCPI was first described in 2003. It has been validated. This means HCPI can reliably distinguish painful and pain-free dogs. It's also capable of measuring improvements after administration of painkillers. The HCPI contains 11 simple questions.

Online pain indices compare your painful dog to a 'normal' dog, but what does 'normal' look like? The PFDI recognises that 'normal' varies with age and breed. It collects data from pain-free dogs and uses it to calibrate the online HCPI.

FCPI was developed in 2019 by VetLessons and The Conscious Cat. We collected lifestyle data from 1240 pain-free cats. FCPI allows carers of painful cats to compare mood and function with age-matched pain-free cats.

The original anonymous feline lifestyle survey is available as a free online resource. Sharing the PFCI link with other cat carers is very valuable. We use the data it collects to teach cat carers how to recognise signs of chronic pain.
