The genes which code for folded ears also cause bone and joint deformities (1). All Scottish Folds have orthopaedic problems triggered by osteochondrodysplasia.
Bone deformities include stumpy legs, a short back and knobbly joints. Some cats cope well despite their deformities. There is no cure, but there are several treatment options to improve quality of life (2).
On average, cats with stumpier tails have more severe deformities and the hindlimbs are more affected than the forelimbs.
